1838 Census Transcripts

ATCHA has compiled a typed transcript of all the 1838 returns for the Municipality of Argyle, Yar. Co., NS. All of the information has been transcribed, but in a slightly different order than it appears on the microfilm. A small portion of the rest of Yarmouth Co. has also been transcribed. 1860-1861 Census Transcripts

ATCHA is in the process of compiling a transcript of the 1860-61 returns for Yar. Co., NS. Only the pages (or abstracts) of the microfilmed return which contain names are transcribed. The transcript provides the following information:

  • Name of the polling place
  • Number of the abstract
  • Name of the head of the household
  • Male (M), female (F) and total population in household
  • Births since 30 March 1860, M & F
  • Number of living children under one year of age, M & F, and deaths for this age group since 30 March 1860, M & F
  • Number living (& deaths) over one and under two, M & F

ATCHA has compiled a typed transcript of the 1871 nominal return of the living for all of Yarmouth Co. The transcript, a sample of which follows, provides the following information:

  • Census year and microfilm reel number
  • Polling district and sub-district identification
  • Microfilm page number
  • Identification number given to each household and to each family polled within a district. Note that the recorded numbers of households and families diverge because there were often more than one family living in a house.

1901 Census Transcripts

ATCHA has photocopied the first 17 columns of each page of the microfilmed 1901 census returns for Yarmouth Co. Each page of photocopied material, a sample of which follows, provides the following information:

  • Col. 1-2 identification number given to each household and to each family polled within a district
  • Col. 3-7 name, sex, colour, relation to head of family, marital status
  • Col. 8-10 month & date of birth, year of birth, and age at last birthday
  • Col. 11 country or place of birth, specifying Province or Territory if in Canada, and adding “r” (rural) or “u” (urban)
  • Col. 12 year of immigration to Canada
  • Col. 13 year of naturalization
  • Col. 14-16 racial or tribal origin, nationality, and religion
  • Col. 17 occupation
