MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MINUTES
MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF ARGYLE
Minutes Published in Broadsheet or Poster Format
Minutes are of the Annual meeting, usually held in January and
the Semi-annual meeting usually held in either May or June of any given year.
It is unclear just when the custom of publishing the Annual and Semi-annual minutes of Municipal Council (and previously the Court of General Sessions of the Peace) came into practice. One assumes the published minutes were posted in various public places throughout the Municipality of Argyle. The earliest surviving set of these published/printed minutes are for October 1872. This listing is for the surviving copies of the minutes, in this format, surviving in the municipal records. Beginning in January 1933, the then Municipal Clerk, Bernard H. Hurlbert, also began glueing a copy of the Annual and Semi-Annual Meeting into the bound Municipal Minute Books. These were then signed by himself and the Warden. In some cases, where a loose copy of the published minutes have not survived, they do exist in the minute books in this form. This will be noted in our lisiting of missing minutes in this appendix.
Note: In some cases duplicate copies were retained that were not encapsulated, but housed in storage tubes. In all cases at least one copy was encapsulated. Published minutes for some years have not survived. These were the copies which remained extant in the Argyle Township Court House in 1983. Previous to 1945 most Township and later Municipal Clerks and other officials conducted the majority of their business from their homes in the village of Tusket. It is clear that many of their records were eventually deposited at the Court House when the Municipality established a proper office of business there in 1945.

The published minutes were glued into the minute books by Clerk Bernard H. Hurlbert. Those published minutes found in the minute books, and listed as missing copies below, stand as the only copy and the only evidence that the Municipality did continue to publish their minutes until the end of 1955.

Minute books suggest with the May 1955 Semi-annual minutes the tradition of publishing the minutes in this format ceased.
