Series F: Overseers of the Poor and Welfare. — 1911-1947. — 10.5 cm of textual records.

The Town of Wedgeport had a committee whose job it was to deal with the supervision of the poor of the Town who were unable to support themselves due to unemployment, poor health, family circumstances, etc. The members of this committee were authorized to make contracts with persons or corporations for the care and support of such persons. This committee submitted to the Council an annual estimate of funds required for these services.

Series contains records relating to these provisions of financial and practical aid. The records are arranged into four sub-series including:

  • Hospital Accounts
  • General Town Relief and Welfare Expenditure
  • Poor Farm Records
  • Child Welfare Records.

Sub-series 1: Hospital Accounts and related material. — 1920- 1947. — 6 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of records pertaining to accounts to be paid by the Town to various hospitals within Nova Scotia for the care of Town residents. Some of these accounts were paid in part by the patients or their families but many of the accounts became the responsibility of the Town due to the patients’ inability to pay for their own hospitilization. These records consist of correspondence with various hospitals in the province; notices of fees chargeable to the Town of Wedgeport from various hospitals; medical reports; and notices of admission.

Sub-series has been arranged chronologically and is divided according to names of hospitals. Hospitals whose accounts appear within the sub-series include:

Sub-series 2: General Town Relief, Welfare Expenditure and associated material. — 1921-1947. — 2 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of material documenting the methods by which the Town provided assistance to its more needy residents and the cost of providing “town relief”. These records consist of notices of payment due to individuals for board, maintenance and nursing duties; funeral expenses; requests for financial aid; notices of old age pension payments; correspondence regarding the transfer of families from one municipality to another; and receipts for maintenance.

Sub-series contains correspondence regarding bonds of maintenance; statements of maintenance payments; requests for financial aid; orders for delivery of neglected children to the Children’s Aid Society; and receipts for maintenance.
