Series L: Poor Farm Records. — 1898-1926. — 66 cm of textual records.

Series consists of records pertaining to the planning, construction, and subsequent operation of the Poor Asylum (Farm) for the Municipality of Argyle. Series is arranged into four sub-series dealing with:

the planning and construction of the Poor Farm
inmates of the Poor Farm
financial accounts
debentures

Sub-series 1: Planning and Construction Records. — 1898-1902. — 5 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of reports from the committee involved in the planning of establishing a Poor Farm; estimates for the construction of the Poor Farm; tenders for the construction of the Poor Farm; agreements with Sylvain Potier & James Potier, contractors; material specifications for the construction of the Poor Farm buildings; and documents relating to the purchase of property for the Poor Farm.

Sub-series 2: Register of Inmates of Poor Asylum – Argyle. — 1901-1926. — 3 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of the “Register of Inmates of Poor Asylum – Argyle”. The register provides the following information: name of inmate, age, former residence, date of entry, marital status, religion, mental condition, death date, place of burial, and additional notations when inmates left the Poor Farm for various reasons.

Note:
The register also contains information for the period 1927-1972, when the Poor Farm was closed.

Sub-series 3: Financial Accounts. — 1898-1926. — 48 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of general bills and receipts generated by the day-to-day operations of the Poor Farm in the Municipality of Argyle.

These records include bills & receipts for such matters as: farm supplies and equipment; groceries; building maintenance and repair; purchase of livestock; bedding and other supplies; transportation for inmates to other institutions such as the Nova Scotia Hospital; blacksmith services; and medical and funeral expenses.

Sub-series 4: Debentures. — 1901-1920. — 10 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of debentures sold by the Municipality of Argyle in order to raise capital funds for the construction and subsequent capital expenditures of the Poor Farm.
