Series M: Public Health Records. — 1882-1926. — 33 cm of textual records.

Series consists of records generated by the Board of Health for the Municipality of Argyle, which was responsible for the prevention and control of contagious diseases, the regulation of sewage disposal in the Municipality, the appointment of Sanitary Inspectors, Medical Health Officers, and Public Health Nurses, and any other issues concerning public health.

Sub-series 1: Minutes. — 1894-1926. — 3 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of the minute book for the Board of Health of the Municipality of Argyle which covers the period 27 June, 1894 to 17 December, 1980.

The minute book also covers the period from 1927 to 1980, which is shared by RG 4 Series E (Public Health Records), Sub-series 1 (Minutes).

Sub-series 2: Reports from Board of Health Officials. — 1895-1925. — 10 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of reports compiled by the Sanitary Inspectors, from the various districts throughout the Municipality of Argyle, on cases of contagious disease; the quarantining of various properties where contagious diseases were present; and various courses of treatment (fumigation of houses, use of disinfectants, etc.)

Sub-series also includes reports from the Medical Health Officer for the Municipality of Argyle reporting on the presence of contagious diseases, and control of same through examination of the public schools and private residences. Reports deal with occasional school closures, due to epidemics. The primary contagious diseases dealt with in the reports were small pox, scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles, tuberculosis, and polio.

Reports of the Medical Health Officer for the Municipality of Argyle usually include medical services provided to the Poor Farm. There are some years where a separate physician was contracted for the Poor Farm. When this was the case there are reports dealing only with the medical services for the Poor Farm.

From 1920 to 1925 there are also reports pertaining to the services of a Public Health Nurse and Argyle’s share of costs for same.

Sub-series 3: Financial Accounts. — 1882-1925. — 10 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of bills and receipts for the following:

bills for the removal of dead animals from roads
bills from medical health officer for medical services rendered
bills paid to institutions outside of the Province for Municipality of Argyle citizens
bills for transportation of patients to the Nova Scotia Hospital
bills for the examination and certification of the mentally ill
payments to physicians for coroners inquests
financial summaries of funds spent by the Board of Health
bills for printing of posters, by-laws, etc.
records of payments to Health Inspectors
records of payment of stipends and travel to Board of Health members
payments to pharmacists for pharmaceutical supplies
accounts of funds spent in the control of specific epidemics
accounts with the Victoria General Hospital.

Sub-series 4: Correspondence. — 1886-1924. –5 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of correspondence with the Office of Public Charities (concerning Argyle’s expenses at “Mount Hope Asylum”); Hospital for the Insane; blind; physicians (concerning the examination of patients with mental disorders); Corning & Chipman, Solicitors (Board of Health matters); Nova Scotia Hospital for the Insane (concerning patients from the Municipality of Argyle); Department of Public Health, Halifax (correspondence and circulars); and the Provincial Secretary (regarding Argyle’s appointment of Medical Officers).

Sub-series 5: Nova Scotia Hospital for the Insane. — 1889-1926. — 5 cm of textual records.

Sub-series consists of records dealing with the mentally ill from the Municipality of Argyle who were patients at the Nova Scotia Hospital for the Insane, and Argyle’s payments for same.
